Nana Ama was taking far more than the recommended dosage of paracetamol for her pain, she continued to use it for several weeks before she finally visited the doctor. When I informed her the paracetamol overdose has damaged her liver, she was shocked. She exclaimed “But , it is just paracetamol!!”.
Do you know that overdose of paracetamol can damage the liver and even lead to death? The liver is a vital organ in the body
Its functions are:
1. To help remove toxic substances from the body.
2. To produces substances that aids food digestion.
3. It helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol in the body.
4. Helps the body fight infection and disease
It helps with mild to moderate pain. It is safe to use in everyone (adult pregnant women) except people with liver problem *(they need to use with caution or not at all).* The maximum dose per day for an adult weighing over 50kg is 4gram (i.e. 4 tablets in 24 hours). Don’t take more than 4 doses in 24 hours. Adults weighing more than 50kg can take 2 tablets not less than 4-6 hours apart. Adults less than 50kg should take 1 tablet 4 times a day , make sure it is at least 4-6hours apart. It is safer to use every 6 to 8 hours (3-4 times a day). Paracetamol is safe to use over a long period of time as long as you don’t use more than the recommended dose.
