Parliament Suspended over Approval of Supreme Court Justice Nominees.
Parliament Suspended over Approval of Supreme Court Justice Nominees. The government of Ghana lately Nominated Minister for State, Deputy ministers and four Supreme Court Justices. A committee was set aside for the vetting of the nominees. The nominees were thoroughly vetted to ensure their levels of competences and capabilities match the job descrption.
Now it was time for the individual nominees to be approved by parliament. This task wasn’t easily taken by the parliamentarians in the parliament. Prior to the approval of the president nominees, a 63 page document or report was distributed among the members of parliament. This brought a heated debated between the minority and the majority in parliament. In fact there was division in ideas here.
Akudzetu Ablakwa and other concerned members of the house requested for suspension of sitting so that they can scrutinize the dorcument. Even though this idea was a very sory story to the majority the speaker of parliament granted the house one hour suspension of sittings.
Meanwhile, Parliament has inversely approved the Minister of state, and all the Deputy ministers appointed by the president plus two Supreme Court Judges. The remaining two Justices did not get it easy as the minority believed that, they have party affiliation hence it will bring bias and favoritism in court when dealing with political issues.
This was a major controversial episode for Alban Bagbin. Looking at the nomination of Akufo Addo’s nominees so far, the minority wanted a secrete voting which was opposed by the majority. In deed several concerns reared their ugly heads till the speaker accepted the option for private or secrete voting.
It came to our notice that the house kept on kicking against the two Justices of the Supreme court even though all the other nominees of the president were approved. Another reason why the minority had the idea of not approving the two justices was that, the minority said, this is the time government expenditure must be cut down and therefore would be valueless and aimless to approve the two Justices at this crucial time.
Again, another concern raised was that, the justices lack the requisite practical or service experience to function as a supreme court judge.
