63% of Ghana trained teachers get UK’s qualified teacher status easily to teach in the UK | Similar number in Nigeria, South Africa, etc.

Qualified Teacher Status is a designation given to qualified teachers to teach in the UK. Any teacher who is trained outside the United Kingdom must obtain this status to teach in the UK.

However, some countries are exempted from the rigorous process to obtain qualified teacher status. The exempted African countries are Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. These countries are exempted because their teacher training education processes are considered to meet the UK’s standard.

The statistics

According to the registrar of Ghana’s National Teaching Council, over sixteen thousand teachers (16,000) in Ghana applied for the UK’s Qualified Teacher Status as of the year 2023. Out of the number, over ten thousand teachers (10,000) got the Qualified Teacher Status.

The total number of teachers who already got the status translates to sixty-three percent (63%).

The remaining teachers are waiting for their responses while others reapply. New teachers are applying as well.
