Nurses leaving Ghana to Abroad for employment: ministry of Health said its very risky exposing our health facilities to the cold arms of calamity by nurses neglecting their country.
The ministry of health has raised a worrisome development which is not so good for the growth of mother Ghana. The minister of health lamented on how nurses are evacuating their mandates to serve the country. Statistically, more than twice the number of nurses who used to travel outside the country previously was recorded to have left the country just at the middle part of 2022 alone.
The issue kept on skyrocketing and worsen even the more in 2023. Nurses who were already employed to honour their obligations as they were bonded to serve the country travel outside the country due to poor salaries they reveive.
Some complained of a sudden cancelation of all manner of allowances that they used to enjoy leaving the salary alone which is difficult to relay on. Per the findings, nurses in the foreign world are paid as three to four times higher than what the country offer them. Apart from the salary, nurses working outside the country have better conditions of service and succulent accommodation facilities aside other allowances such as over time.
All These incentives force those nurses with the means to leave the country for good. The unemployed nurses are using this as a yardstick to travel outside the country for employment. Countries like canada, United Kingdom, Brazil and so on constantly give scholarships to nurses to further their education outside Ghana and afterwards employment offer is given to them.
The minister sees this to be so worrying. If care is not taken we shall gradually loose all our health workers to foreign world. But the challenging issue is that, if alot of nurses are leaving the country why is government not employing the nurses at home to replace them. Several butches of nurses are at home waiting for postings. However, time will tell since the country is not in normal times. Government can not afford to continue paying for workers in the public sector if IMF Board Level Approval happens beyond reasonable time.
The minister gave assurance that nurses in the house will be employed in due cause. Lets wait patiently we will update you incase clearance is given for employment of nurses by ministry of finance into the health sector.
