People are blindfolded to emulate very hazardous practices in the name of fashion. Great danger awaiting both men and women who constantly inculcate into their lives persisting bleaching. This is a strong Warning from Ministry of Health.
According to Optometry Department Association of Ghana, most cases of irreversible blindness militating against unborn babies comes from couple who constantly use bleaching products either on the skin or hair.
The study revealed that, pregnant women especially, should be automatically banned from the usage of bleaching pomades and ointments either on the skin or hair.
These chemicals are rapidly absorbed into the body immediately after their application on to the human skin or hair.
A Public Relation Officer, Dr. Alfred Gardemor, made pronouncement that, bleaching products contain carcinogens capable of causing skin cancers. He then said, these chemicals would not only affect the pregnant woman but also the unborn baby merciless.
The Principal and Head of the Optometric Department of Nsawam Government Hospital, during the public sensitization initiative called my eye! my vision! as part of the sixth Ghana News Agency celebration hosted at Tema Regional Office of Ghana, made a wonderful recommendation seemingly that, as a matter of urgency every single soul needed to have his or her eye examined even if no symptom of eye defect is shown.
This was a collaborative public education advocacy campaign to reveal the untold naked truth to the public about the high rate of visual impairment the whole world together with mother Ghana is battling with, especially in children and in the youth.

During pregnancy, the placenta supplies the developing embryo with food nutrients and oxygen through diffusion and water through osmosis. This complex mechanisms affect the baby tremendously when compromised.
When the chemical content in the mothers bloodstream become too high, it causes oxidation and the counter effect is neuroplasticity destruction which impact negatively on the cornea, the retina and lense of the eyes, said the Optometrist.
Dr. Kwame Oben Nyarko an Optometrist at Third Eye Care and Vision Centre added his voice that, both the young and the old must take a mandatory role to protect their eyes.
He also advised against the careless buying of an optional cheap, so called medicated spectacle at the roadside by people with eye defect to correct their problematic sight.
The human eye is a very complex microscope which uses sophisticated means to operate. Special but thorough series cross examinations and critical diagnosis should be done before the issuance of the spectacle other than that, any effort made will be tentemant to cos ninety, so he said.
